American Red Cross provides a way for people to help others in urgent
need. A private, nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization, the Red
Cross can deliver services quickly and efficiently, but we must depend on
the generosity of the American people to carry out our programs and
services. The willing spirits and tireless efforts of more than one
million trained volunteers, a ratio of about 45 volunteers to every paid
staff member, enable us to serve people in need. Our fiscal responsibility
has led Money magazine to name the Red Cross as one of the 10 best-managed
charities in the nation. The American Institute of Philanthropy has given
us an A+ rating in financial performance.
