AEDs and AED Training
Automated
External Defibrillators, (AEDs) are a new, effective tool for
saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest. In the past year,
250,000 Americans died of sudden cardiac arrest -- nearly one
death every two minutes. Up to 50,000 of these deaths could
have been prevented if someone had initiated the Cardiac Chain
of Survival and an AED had been available for immediate use at
the time of the emergency. The machine guides the user through
a series of voice prompts to administer the necessary care for
a victim of cardiac arrest. AEDs are now widely used at
airports, sporting arenas, shopping malls as well as many
businesses and are proven to be safe and effective.
Can
I buy an AED at the Merced-Mariposa American Red Cross office?
No, but to help the Red Cross meet its mission of saving
lives, agreements have been established with AED manufacturers
to allow Red Cross chapters facilitate the purchase of AED
units and provide CPR and AED training to AED purchasers.
